WHAT IS SOMATIC WORK?

Your body has been listening all along.

“Somatic” comes from the Greek soma — the living body, known from the inside. Somatic work is any practice that starts there: with sensation, breath, posture, impulse, and the felt sense of what is happening right now, rather than with the story about it.

Why the body?

Because the body keeps its own record. Long before a pattern becomes a thought — “I always do this,” “I can’t let myself rest” — it is a shape the body learned to hold: a jaw that braces, shoulders that guard, a breath that stays shallow. Those shapes were once intelligent. They kept you safe. Thinking about them rarely changes them, because they were not built by thinking.

Somatic work meets the pattern where it lives. Slowing down enough to notice sensation, letting an impulse complete, finding the ground under you — these are small acts, and they are how the nervous system learns that the danger has passed.

How consent works here

  • You are the authority on your own body — nothing happens to you, only with you
  • Every form of touch or physical support is offered, explained, and agreed to first, and can be declined at any point
  • “No,” “slower,” and “stop” are complete sentences, and they are always honored
  • You can keep your eyes open, stay clothed, sit up, or leave the room — the work adapts to you
  • Nothing is a test, and there is no way to do it wrong

What is embodiment?

Embodiment is what somatic work is in service of: living from inside your body instead of hovering above it. It is being able to feel what you feel while it is happening, to tell the difference between now and then, and to stay present in your own skin through joy, grief, conflict, and rest.

Most of us learned to leave the body early, and for good reasons. Embodiment is the slow, kind return. It is not a state you achieve once; it is a capacity that grows each time you come back.

The nervous system, in plain terms

Your autonomic nervous system is always asking one question: am I safe? When the answer is yes, the body can rest, digest, connect, and play. When the answer is no, it mobilizes — fight or flight — or, if that fails, it shuts down and goes numb. None of this is chosen. It is fast, automatic, and shaped by everything that has happened to you.

Regulation is not staying calm all the time. It is the ability to move between these states and find your way back — to be activated and then settle, to feel a lot and then rest. Somatic work builds that range directly, through the body, at a pace the body can trust. Over time the window in which you can stay present gets wider, and life gets roomier inside it.
